Making Libraries
Kyoto City Zoo
Kyoto City Zoo, founded more than 100 years ago in Okazaki, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City, was renovated in 2015. We helped its renewal of their zoo library. For generations, it has not been the librarians but the animal handlers who took care of the books as the tradition. Currently, Mr. Sakamoto, a veterinary has been taking care of the books after having been an elephant handler. After many discussions with him, we planned a bookshelf project that provides the new point of view towards animals as well as the existing books selected by animal experts. Since the bookshelf is located before the ticket counters, the bookshelf has become a free, public school. There, we have placed more books such as mangas, art books and picture books that are animal-themed, so that many people can enjoy. Also, we have created a special corner that are unique in Kyoto. For instance, at the bookshelf called "Kyoto's Great Artists and Zoo", you can find the books of paintings the artists after Seiho Takeuchi created by sketching animals in the Kyoto City Zoo.
